Senior Backend Engineer - Engagement

You will work in the Grow & Engage domain—the heart of the N26 experience. As a Senior Backend Engineer with a product-centric mindset, you will partner closely with Product Owner, Tech Lead and Designers to translate user needs into seamless, scalable backend systems that empower our users from day one. This is a hybrid role based in Berlin or Barcelona, with at least 8 days per month in the office.

What you'll do

• Do discovery, design, develop, test, deploy and maintain software in a thriving environment.
• Manage individual project priorities and deliverables whilst working in a team who enjoy knowledge sharing sessions.
• Stay up to date with the latest trends in technology.
• Propose new product ideas, build tech tools or try out new architectural approaches during our Get Stuff Done Days (GSDD).

What you'll need

• Experience in developing software using a JVM language and Spring Boot in large-scale production systems.
• In-depth understanding of microservice architecture.
• Knowledge of both relational (preferably Postgres) and non-relational databases.
• Appreciation of working in a modern cloud architecture, preferably with AWS.
• Product-centric mindset: you ask "why", then "what" and only then think of "how".
• Strong sense of ownership: you take initiatives from early-stage ideas all the way to customer-facing results.
• Ongoing appreciation and consideration for security and motivation to write well-tested and well-documented code.

Nice to have

• Experience with Kotlin.
• Experience using AI tools (e.g., Claude, GitHub Copilot) to accelerate development.
