Power BI Consultant (Freelance basis)

About the role

We're seeking a Power BI specialist to audit, optimize, and clean up our existing semantic model, data ingestion pipelines, and dashboards for a part time (50%) dedicated project from July to November 2026. You'll audit our current semantic model for performance issues and design flaws, collaborate with our data engineers to optimize our data lake ingestion processes, and refactor our dashboards for consistency, usability, and efficiency while instilling best practices in our team for continued success after the project ends.

What you'll do

• Audit and document the current semantic model structure & relationships for consistency with our ontologies and other existing applications
• Identify and eliminate redundant tables, views, columns, and measures within the MS Data Lake
• Rewrite inefficient or problematic DAX formulas for clarity and speed
• Identify problem areas on the Microsoft side of ingestion and collaborate with our data engineers for required modifications
• Verify data accuracy and consistency across Power BI
• Audit existing dashboards for consistency, usability, and performance and propose consolidation or redesign
• Create & update documentation for semantic models and dashboard usage
• Create guidance and best practices for Power BI usage

What you'll need

• Minimum 3+ years of professional Power BI experience, including data model optimization and integration with various data stores within & outside the MS ecosystem
• Ability to diagnose and fix complex formula issues
• Proven ability to audit and refactor existing BI solutions
• Strong documentation and communication skills
• Experience with version control or change management in BI environments
• Familiarity with Dagster, DBT, and Postgres
