Engineering Manager

About the role

Engineering Manager position leading the AI Search Experience team at Ecosia, reporting to the CTO. You'll manage engineers building AI-powered search features while combining technical leadership with people management in Berlin or remotely.

What you'll do

• Partner with Product and Design teams to shape AI Search Experience strategy and provide technical direction
• Support team in building AI-powered search features, grounding LLM responses in structured data and web content
• Guide architectural decisions around LLM integration, retrieval systems, and evaluation pipelines
• Ensure operational excellence, reliability, and scalability of AI systems in production
• Oversee development and maintenance of internal frontend framework stack
• Collaborate with other Search teams on cross-team initiatives and shared technical standards
• Enable team success by removing roadblocks, facilitating decisions, and improving processes
• Hold regular 1:1s, feedback sessions, and growth conversations for career development
• Review team performance and ensure fair evaluation and compensation
• Promote continuous learning culture around AI engineering best practices

What you'll need

• Documented history of leading, managing, coaching, and mentoring engineers from diverse backgrounds
• 5+ years experience designing and shipping software to production end-to-end
• Technical depth in AI/ML engineering, LLM-based systems, search, or information retrieval
• Proficiency with modern web stack, cloud environments, and infrastructure-as-code
• Strong sense of ownership, pragmatism, and bias toward action
