Senior Backend Engineer - Golang

About the role

You'll join the Bank Activation and Revenue team to build greenfield services that guide merchants through their activation journey with SumUp's business account. This role focuses on creating the technical infrastructure for product experimentation and cross-selling to drive merchant adoption and revenue growth.

What you'll do

• Design and implement services (Banners, Rewards, and Feature Toggles) from the ground up to power global product experimentation
• Create technical logic that tracks and incentivizes users through their first five meaningful transactions
• Own the full lifecycle of features from architectural design to production monitoring
• Participate in daily deliveries with fast iteration and data-driven testing
• Build robust APIs for mobile and web banking while managing asynchronous processing via Kafka
• Collaborate with engineering teams across the Bank and wider SumUp ecosystem for scalable integration

What you'll need

• Solid backend development experience in Golang, with interest in Kotlin and Elixir
• Understanding of system architecture, object-oriented and functional design principles, data modeling, and API design
• Growth mindset with curiosity for complex problem-solving and fast iterations
• Experience supporting legacy systems while architecting new services for long-term scalability
• Full ownership approach from design to production readiness with focus on clean, maintainable code
• Ability to communicate complex technical trade-offs effectively to engineers and stakeholders

Nice to have

• Previous experience in a Growth-focused engineering team
• Experience building rules engines or Reward/Incentive systems
• Familiarity with the Fintech or Banking regulatory landscape
