Senior Backend Engineer – AI/Audio/Python

Amara is a Berlin-based startup creating an AI-powered companion for older adults. The product supports cognitive abilities, provides daily structure, and helps people maintain independence and safety.

The Role

As an early engineering hire, you will architect the backend foundation of a voice-driven, AI-first product. This is a high-ownership position designing scalable APIs, real-time audio systems, and integrating cutting-edge language models and audio technologies.

Key Responsibilities

• Design robust backend services using Python (FastAPI) and real-time audio pipelines
• Integrate LLMs, embeddings, and audio models including Whisper and ElevenLabs
• Develop voice AI features and intelligent conversation flows with LangChain
• Collaborate with frontend engineers on API design
• Implement authentication and database management using Supabase
• Build CI/CD workflows with Docker and Kubernetes/AWS
• Support model optimization and orchestration with AI researchers

Requirements

• Production experience with Python and FastAPI
• Experience integrating LLMs or audio models (TTS, STT, voice cloning)
• Software architecture and design pattern expertise
• Knowledge of Supabase, PostgreSQL, and vector databases
• Familiarity with LangChain, RAG systems, and embeddings
• Docker, CI/CD, and cloud infrastructure experience
• Fluent English (written and spoken)
