About the role

You'll build and evolve core platform foundations that power n8n's workflow engine and frontend platform. This role focuses on enabling product engineers and the open-source community to ship confidently across cloud and self-hosted deployments while improving reliability, scalability, and performance.

What you'll do

  • Contribute to backend subsystems including durable workflow execution, orchestration patterns, and queue/task distribution
  • Apply best practices for correctness and resilience in systems operating across cloud and self-hosted environments
  • Improve data architecture and database performance, reliability, and maintainability
  • Work on core canvas architecture and frontend platform primitives for complex workflow building experiences
  • Build and improve real-time collaboration capabilities using WebSockets and CRDT-style approaches
  • Contribute to performance and rendering improvements including web workers and rendering optimization
  • Contribute to technical decisions through clear proposals and RFCs
  • Support peers through code reviews, pairing, and knowledge sharing

What you'll need

  • Systems thinking mindset with focus on correctness, trade-offs, and reliability
  • System design experience with ability to explain technical choices clearly
  • Strong TypeScript experience in large, evolving codebases
  • Excellent collaboration and cross-functional communication skills
  • Experience improving and refactoring existing systems for scalability
  • For backend: Node.js backend systems beyond CRUD, distributed systems knowledge, data architecture experience
  • For frontend: Complex frontend systems experience, performance optimization expertise, modern TypeScript development

Nice to have

  • Workflow/orchestration or devtools experience
  • Open-source contribution and maintenance experience
  • Large-scale SaaS systems exposure
  • Experience with monolith to modular architecture migrations
  • Familiarity with durable execution patterns and event-driven systems
  • Real-time collaborative applications experience
  • Multi-deployment environment awareness
