About the role
This is a high-impact role at the core of what makes Vay possible. You'll own the system architecture and functional safety of our Remote Driving platform, shaping how our vehicles behave in real-world, safety-critical scenarios. Working at the intersection of hardware, software, and vehicle integration, you'll play a key role in bringing a completely new category of mobility to life.
What you'll do
- Define and evolve system architecture and requirements across ECUs, motion control, connectivity, and cloud interfaces
- Design and validate safety mechanisms including redundancy, fail-safe/fail-operational behavior, and minimum risk manoeuvres
- Plan and execute vehicle-level testing to validate system performance and safety responses in real-world conditions
- Develop monitoring frameworks and dashboards to track system health, detect faults, and minimize downtime
- Own the functional safety concept, deriving safety goals and building Functional and Technical Safety Concepts (ISO 26262)
- Build and maintain the safety case, ensuring readiness for audits and compliance across the full development lifecycle
- Lead safety analysis activities (HARA, FMEA, FTA) and ensure full traceability from hazard identification to verification
What you'll need
- 5+ years of experience in systems engineering within automotive, robotics, or similar safety-critical domains
- Hands-on experience across the ISO 26262 lifecycle, including HARA, safety concepts, FMEA/FTA, and safety case development
- Strong experience with requirements and safety analysis tools (e.g. DOORS, Jama, Medini, Enterprise Architect)
- Solid programming or technical background (Python, C++, ROS) and familiarity with Linux-based systems and monitoring tools
- Clear communicator, able to translate complex safety concepts into structured, actionable documentation
- Collaborative and pragmatic, comfortable moving between system design and hands-on vehicle integration work
Nice to have
- Experience with SOTIF (ISO 21448) and automotive cybersecurity (ISO/SAE 21434)
- Familiarity with ASPICE processes and assessments
- Experience with MBSE approaches and tools (e.g. SysML, Cameo)
- Background in teleoperations, remote driving, or autonomous vehicle systems
What they offer
- ESOP stock options
- Unlimited paid vacation days
- Subsidised Deutschland ticket (Berlin)
- Subsidised Urban Sports Club or FitX membership
- 350 EUR home office set-up
- Relocation financial assistance when relocating to Berlin
